Counseling Service Expands

Additional

counselors have been added to the counseling staff at the Gear Foundation program. Since the beginning of the program in mid-March, 56 out of 68 counseling hours have been conducted. Only eight no-shows and one missed connection were encountered. Service has been provided to more men than women so far.

The director of counseling services is continuing to look for qualified personnel to staff the program. Women are especially needed. Future plans include staff training and development and arrangements are being made for insurance capabilities for repayment purposes.

The counseling program deals with general mental health and other problems. Records are kept in strict confidence and minors are not treated with this service.

NGTF Investigates Police Hiring

The National Gay Task Force is conducting a national inquiry into the hiring practices of police departments in major cities across the U.S. Letters sent to the police chiefs of the nation's 50 largest cities are aimed at gathering data about the hiring of openly gay and lesbian officers and recruitment efforts in gay communities.

"This project combines our longstanding concern that gays have equal access to employment with our recent campaign to reduce the growing incidents of violence towards gays and lesbians," said Lucia Valeska, NGTF Executive Director. "We will work with local activists to encourage departments to remove hiring bans and take steps to improve police/gay community relations," she added.

The project's goal is to develop a close rapport with police departments and gay and lesbian communities through the designation of special community liaisons, police training about special concerns in the gay community and heightened awareness in

combatting anti-gay violence, according to Mel Boozer, NGTF Director of Civil Rights Advocacy.

NGTF will publish and distribute the survey results in a comparative profile of local departments designed to high-
